A very fine old 4/4 italian violin after Gasparo da Salo, labeled Januarius Gagliano filius Alexandri fecit Neap. 1786. The violin has an excellent straight high grained spruce of the top and two pieces back of amazing strongly flamed maple with matched sides, neck and scroll. Rich golden amber varnish remains in good condition. Double inlaid purfling. The whole length of the violin is 595 mm and the back 367 mm. The width of the upper bouts: 166 mm; middle bouts: 114 mm; lower bouts: 210 mm.
